My 20-something brother is a straight white man living in the American south. He has commented more than once on the irony that the system our region clings so desperately to was designed to put people specifically like him at the very top of the ladder, and yet he struggled economically despite his skin, his genitals, and his impressive work ethic. There should be absolutely no reason why he shouldn't be driving a new car up to a new multi-story mansion in a fashionable development after working a 9-5 in an air-conditioned office with a sexy secretary. He doesn't WANT any of those things, but they should supposedly be ready and waiting for him if the fundamentals of our system are to be believed in. And yet he can't afford to live on his own, and still hasn't attended college because he can't afford his share of rent AND student debt. Not that he wants to profit from this system, but, like... How did it go so wrong for white boys in the south? We like to laugh about it.
