It All Begins With Sad Emo Kids
They can change the world for the better, but only if we let them.
There has never been a question in my mind about whether the terms ‘Emo’, ‘Goth’, and ‘Punk’ were the exact same things. Of course they weren’t — why would we need three different words for something so specific? How many flavors of sad teenager do we really need?
I’ve always had an affinity, not so much for the sad, angsty attitude, but for the aesthetic that comes with it. My brothers and I have shared a certain appreciation for the macabre since childhood. I think it’s draw is the quiet observation that some aspects of life are awful, some seasons are worse than others, and that death is no respecter of persons. Its the simple fact that the negative was being acknowledged, and addressed, and provided for our consideration instead of being glossed over just because we were children.
Don’t think about the rain! There will be a rainbow, later. HOORAY!!!!!!
Still… Why can’t we talk about how its raining right now? Why is it so wrong, when its so obvious, so important and even vital to life?
In my humble opinion, that’s the reason so many teens go Em-Oth-Unk, as we called it, in middle and high school. That’s about the age where the world suddenly starts expanding rapidly, and all its flaws and evils become for obvious, and…
